There will be Plenary sessions by renowned researchers and academicians. There will be interactive round table sessions and mini lectures followed by open discussion time. The event will also feature the Clara Lim-Sylianco (CLS) Lecture and a competition for undergraduate research projects, the Young Scientists’ Forum (YSF).
Written by Jeanie Rose Deluza To promote advancement in the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology in the country, the Philippine Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (PSBMB) - Visayas Chapter hosted its 2nd Regional Symposium on February 21-22, 2019 at the Visayas State University Convention Center. With the theme “Bringing Health and Wellness to new Heights through Biochemistry and Molecular Biology”, the symposium gathered more than 80 participants from different state universities in Visayas. These include the resource speakers from Southern Leyte State University, University of Eastern Philippines, Silliman University, and VSU, with special participation from the new CHED-RO8 Director Dr. George M. Colorado CESO III, PSBMB National President Dr. Frank Heralde III and PSBMB Board Of Director Dr. Grace Fe Yu. Dr. Junie B. Billones, a VSU alumnus who graduated as Magna Cum Laude in agricultural chemistry, served as keynote speaker. Dr. Billones talked about computational biochemistry, the advanced approach in finding new drugs for “superbugs” or the “drug-resistant microorganisms”. Meanwhile, Dr. Colorado, also inspired and encouraged all the researchers and budding scientists-to-be to create projects that will contribute to the Gross Domestic Product of the Philippines. The two-day event involved activities such as plenary lectures, trade exhibits, poster presentations, election and induction of new PSBMB members and elected officers. VSU College of Arts and Sciences through the respective Departments of Biology, Biotechnology, and Pure and Applied Chemistry headed by Dr. Candelario Calibo in partnership with RainPhil Inc., DIAMED, and Krypton International co-hosted this year’s regional symposium. Dr. Calibo, the PSBMB President - Visayas Chapter, highlighted the importance of the regional fora to educators involved in these fields. “I teach biochemistry but its recent development together with molecular biology is awesome to cope up with. Hence, our invited young resource speakers could provide glimpses of its tremendous progression especially in the field of medical sciences,” said Dr. Calibo. Nomination Guidelines
The PSBMB reserves the right not to declare a winner of the Education Award if a suitable candidate is not found in any one year. For enquiry on the PSBMB Education Award 2018, contact: Chair of the PSBMB Awards and Grants Committee Dr. Roberta N, Garcia Institute of Crop Science, College of Agriculture and Food Science University of the Philippines Los Baños, College, Laguna Email: [email protected]
The workshops and lectures focused on molecular biology, with emphasis on subtopics such as Central Dogma of Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Forensics, Bioinformatics, and Food Biotechnology. Distinguished and decorated speakers were invited to give the informative lectures. Moreover, the 18 participants had a hands-on experience with fun and interactive workshops prepared by the NIMBB “movers”.
A highlight of the activity was the DNA extraction from household materials where everyone got to extract DNA on their own. The workshops perfectly complemented the lecture, making them understand the mechanisms as scientists do in the lab. The lectures, interactive activities, and pen and paper activities were capped by a very fun yet informative quiz bee which fostered a competitive but fun atmosphere in the venue. The RevUP has now returned to Visayas after a long time, the gospel of biochemistry and molecular biology continues to spread through the annual REView and UPdate sessions. The transfer of knowledge from the specialized institutions to the teachers will be beneficial to the country, as these teachers will surely impart their newfound knowledge to the students, we’ll never know, one of these students might hold the key to curing cancer, solving food security, or discover the next great drug of the century.
